The Lion of Chinatown
24 x 36 inches
Acrylic on Canvas
The Lion of Chinatown continues my series on life in Victoria’s most iconic neighbourhoods, exploring the sights, colours, and imagery of Victoria’s historic Chinatown.
The Lion in the painting represents a guardian lion which traditionally guards the entrances to Chinatowns worldwide and symbolize prosperity and success. Indeed the steady confidence of the lion and his exaggerated red and gold background symbolize how Victoria’s Chinatown has rebounded from decades of decline to emerge again as a prosperous and vibrant neighbourhood that has become a source of pride for Victorians of all backgrounds.
