Event Description

To Eat the Flower from the Root is a collection of vibrant oil paintings and objects meant to
situate the viewer in a space of confusion, absurdity, and self-reflection. Using comical subject
matter to depict surreal concepts that are rooted in real-life, real-time experiences, these works
are an active reminder of everything we’ve been through; how we process loss, and how we
grow from it.
-
Cassia Powell is a contemporary artist based in the unceded lands of Lekwungen-speaking
peoples; those of the Songhees, Wyomilth and W̱SÁNEĆ nations, otherwise known as Victoria,
BC. They work with many mediums, but primarily focus on large-scale oil paintings on canvas
and mixed media sculpture. Powell is a Visual Arts (BFA) Honours graduate from the University of Victoria, and is currently represented by SweetPea Gallery.
-
the fifty fifty arts collective is comprised of individuals living and working on unceded and occupied First Nations Territories, specifically the lands of the Songhees and Esquimalt Nations, as well as the W̱SÁNEĆ, Sc'ianew and T'Souke First Nations.
The programming space itself is situated on Songhees and Esquimalt Territory but engages with individuals and communities across Turtle Island.
As a collective we endeavour to deepen our own understandings of how we are implicated in the history and in the present ongoing project of settler colonialism. As members of the fifty fifty arts collective we continually responsibilize ourselves to the complex kind of space that is the fifty fifty which hosts and facilitates the dissemination of the ideas and work of others.
