Bio:
Mamaskatch Jazz Project. Darrel J McLeod is a Nehiyaw (Cree) jazz singer originally from Northern Canada, Treaty 8 territory. He has been singing since he was a toddler, and has had extensive vocal training with masters such as Julliard trained vocalist Robert Morris and U of T MMus level jazz musician, Wes Carroll. Darrel has recorded three albums of jazz with a twist of funk and blues, singing in English, French, Spanish and Portuguese. For several years, he had his own popular jazz show at the Jazz Foundation in Puerto Vallarta accompanied by an extremely talented trio called the Mamaskatch Jazz Project (named after his Governor General award-winning book Mamaskatch: A Cree Coming of Age). His last two albums are entitled Waskeskwan (Cree for Blue Skies): Gershwin Meets Jobim, and Achakos Tapahigan (Shining Hour): Harold Arlen Meets Jobim.

Darrel as an Author:
Darrel’s memoirs, Mamaskatch, A Cree Coming of Age and its sequel, Peyakow: Reclaiming Cree Dignity were published by Douglas and McIntyre in 2018 and 2021, respectively. Mamaskatch won the Governor General’s Award for non-fiction, was shortlisted several other prestigious awards, and has been published in French and German. Peyakow was shortlisted for the Writers’ Trust non-fiction prize in 2021, as well as being shortlisted for two B.C. book prizes, the Hubert Evans Non-Fiction Prize, and the Jim Deva Prize for Writing that Provokes. Darrel is busy putting the final touches on his first novel and writing his fourth book, with the working title The Days After and the Days Before. He lives near Sooke and winters in Puerto Vallarta, reading, writing, and singing jazz.
