Call for Black emerging curator/artist

The University of Victoria Legacy Art Gallery in Victoria, BC is seeking an emerging or aspiring
Black curator or artist to work on an exhibition focusing on Victoria-based contemporary Black
artists. The exhibition will be displayed in tandem to the traveling exhibition, The Chorus is
Speaking, curated by Michelle Jacques and Jenelle Pasiechnik. While The Chorus is Speaking
explores the lived experiences of eight Black artists across so-called “Canada,” the new
exhibition curated by the emerging Black curator or artist will focus on Black artists and
community members living on the traditional and unceded territories of lək̓ ʷəŋən and W̱ SÁNEĆ
Nations. The exhibition will be on display at Legacy Art Gallery (630 Yates Street) from
September to December 2024.

This contract will provide an individual to work directly in mentorship with Curator of Academic
and Community Programs, Regan Shrumm, along with insight from Curator of Collections,
Anahita Ranjbar and Curator of Indigenous Art and Engagement, Lorilee Wastasecoot. The
individual will have the opportunity to engage with contemporary artists, select artworks and
layout the exhibition, work within an allocated budget, assist with contracts, write exhibition
text, and plan related programming to the exhibition. In addition, the curator will assist with the
installation and be present for the exhibition opening.

Contract compensation: $3,500
Application deadline: Friday, April 5, 2024

Requirements:

An emerging or aspiring Black artist, curator, and/or arts administrator, who has:
• Knowledge of Black artists and communities in Victoria and/or Capital Regional District;
• Excellent writing skills;
• Strong track record of meeting deadlines;
• Interested in receiving mentorship around curation and programming;
• Ability to work on the project over a period between May 2024 and October 2024 during
which they dedicate approximately 140 hours.
Goals of the contract:
• Curate an exhibition featuring the works from Victoria-based Black artists and
community members;
• Learn and complete the step-by-step process on curating an exhibition;
• Outreach to Black community members through artist studio visits, research, interviews,
attending community events, and planning programming for the exhibition;
• Have direct mentorship to local Victoria-based curators.
