The day I met the late Trudy Desmond and heard her sing jazz, I knew I wanted to do that too. It felt natural and fun but I just hung on to that feeling and started a career in non-profit management. Fast forward to 2010 when I was finally able to pick up my music again.
Determined to make the most of this gift, I took vocal classes with Elaine Overholt in Toronto and when we moved to Victoria, began lessons with Aidan Miller through the new Contemporary School at the Victoria Conservatory. Then I started a band, first with Aaron Scoones as our coach and then bassist, Joey Smith.
I kept up my vocal training with Maureen Washington and in 2018 she encouraged me to attend the Port Townsend Jazz Workshop where I learned from Grammy nominees, Jean Baylor, and Jazzmeia Horn, and New York Times Critic’s pick, Sachal Vasandani.
In 2019, I started performing solo shows, including Hermann’s Jazz Club, ground zero for jazz in Victoria. I performed 5 solo shows that year including one that was completely - Sold Out.
I also started recording that year and now have 3 singles available — two jazz standards and one original composition. Follow me on Spotify, YouTube and Apple Music. More recordings to come in 2020.
Music is a wonderful journey and I continue to take advantage of the extraordinary learning opportunities that are available. Also in 2019, I took workshops with jazz vocalist Jennifer Scott and I continue to sing with Joey Smith’s Adult Jazz Combos at the Victoria Conservatory. Joey has been such a superb and dedicated mentor to me and I am deeply grateful to him. Indeed, all of my teachers have been so generous, helping me build my sound and deepen my understanding of the music I sing.
