Tom Cochrane is one of Canada’s most enduring rock icons. From his days leading Red Rider to rock ‘n’ roll glory during the ‘80s to a solo career defined by radio anthems like “Life is Highway”, Tom has demonstrated an ability to speak to a mass audience while crafting first-rate pop songs and maintaining artistic integrity. Inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame at the 2003 Juno Awards, Tom takes his place alongside the Tragically Hip, Gordon Lightfoot, and the Rheostatics as among this country’s most valued musical treasures. (He has been awarded seven Junos in total.) Recently, he was paid the ultimate compliment when no less an artist than the immensely talented Todd Rundgren paid homage to the diamond-selling artist by covering Red Rider’s “Lunatic Fringe” in concert. Country act Rascal Flatts recrorded “Life is a Highway” for the animated feature Cars. And artists of a new generation, like Sam Roberts, cite Tom as a seminal influence.

No Stranger, Tom’s first album of new material since 1998’s Xray Sierra, is out this fall, preceded by the single “Didn’t Mean”. The self-produced record is his first for a new record company (Universal) and includes a mix of passionate anthems and stirring ballads. “Rough and Tumble” pays tribute to the courage of both Canadian hockey heroes and small-town soldiers fighting overseas, while the bluesy “Since You Left Me” leans against gentler moments like “Deep Breath.” For the first time in years, Tom is reunited with Red Rider guitarist Ken Greer, who adds his signature sound to a number of tracks. Even more than a new record, however, Tom’s long-awaited tour, featuring new tunes and old favourites, promises to demonstrate the redemptive power of rock ‘n’ roll.
