"To the already long list of Canadians who bleed pure Americana please add The Breakmen. Like their countrymen in The Band before them, they have been known to inspire a bit of the old-time religion with their sublime vocal harmonies." - Nathan Baker, San Francisco Bay Guardian

Fans will be falling off their porch swings at the opportunity to catch this much lauded acoustic roots quartet as they make a stop in fair Victoria between appearances at Saskatchewan's Ness Creek Music Festival and The Discovery Coast Music Festival in Bella Coola, BC. Playing a lead role in BC's flourishing West Coast roots music scene, The Breakmen emerged in 2005 when four Vancouver-based musicians joined forces: Archie Pateman (banjo, guitar, vocals), Matthew Lawson (bass, vocals), Ben Rogalsky (mandolin, guitar, harmonica, vocals) and Lee Watson (guitar, mandolin, vocals). Their music has developed into a distinctive sound they call Roots Soup; a blend of roots, Americana, vintage country, bluegrass, and delicious rock'n roll. Known for tight vocal harmonies and creative instrumentation, their 2006 self-titled debut remained on the Roots Music Review Top 50 Chart for 9 months and received significant airplay nationally on CBC Radio. Their 2008 follow-up "When You Leave Town" received two 2009 Canadian Folk Music Award nominations (Emerging Artist of the Year, Vocal Ensemble of the Year) as well as a 2009 Independent Music Award nomination (Americana Album of the Year). The Breakmen have recently finished recording their third album with JUNO award-winning producer Bob Hamilton at his Old Crow Recording Studio in Whitehorse. The as yet untitled album will be released in November and celebrated with tours across Canada, the USA and Europe.

"Really great playing and strong harmonies" - Tony Trischka, Banjo Master

Since the fall of 2008, Victoria's FITP have honed their foot-stompin' dance tunes and sweet five-part harmonies into their own signature sound. Inspired by everyone from The Stanley Brothers to Charlie Parker and The Rolling Stones, their performances exude a youthful energy and a love of bluegrass, old-time, country and gospel. What began as a one-off collaboration for a Victoria Bluegrass Association event, has gelled into a 5-piece band that sounds like they've been together for a lifetime. Featuring original songs and old favourites, FITP released a 6-song EP last summer that whets the whistle for fans patiently waiting for a full-length album. Flash in the Pan are: Miriam Sonstenes on fiddle (Backyard String Band, The Sweet Lowdown, Sweet Ginger), Cluny MacPherson on banjo (The Dougs, Neckbeard, Rock Island Ramblers), Kelly Sherwin on bass (The Balkan Babes, Ain't Dead Yet), Jeff Dill on guitar (Sweet Ginger, The Yiddish Columbia State Orchestra) and newest member, Chris Herbst on dobro (The Gruff, The Boot Screefers). All contribute vocals and are dedicated to keeping the FITP name ironic. Their next stop? The Coombs Bluegrass Festival.
