BOSVELD

http://www.bosveldmusic.com/

Bosveld’s view of folk, seen through an electro-acoustic lens, gives the genre a welcome identity crisis. Meditative, processed saxophone weaves through cyclical, acoustic guitar rhythms; dropping mixtapes goes hand-in-hand with playing house concerts. Delicate vocals and tender songwriting merges with boundless synthetic fields.

In Afrikaans, the word ‘bosveld’ itself denotes a region of vast fields and rugged terrain. And just as the landscape of the bosveld is full of diverse and varied imagery, Bosveld’s sonic landscape is rich with evolving textures and dynamic changes, open to greater discovery with every listen. The seeds that grew into Bosveld are likewise diverse: folk songwriters like Nick Drake, the guitar compositions of South-African musician Derek Gripper, and UK bass music were the influences that bound Jeremy Mulder and Théan Slabbert a.k.a. Velodrones together in 2013.

Their debut album Veldbrand, Afrikaans for ‘fields of fire,’ features Slabbert’s cascading acoustic guitar and Mulder’s slowly-evolving saxophone lines surfacing above or drowning in electronic textures. On Veldbrand, the duo's closest friends feature as collaborators, including Pascal OfLaki (Hilotrons), Phil Charbonneau (Scattered Clouds), and Jean-François Beauchamp (Amos the Transparent).

Veldbrand will be released in June via Pop Drone. Bosveld will tour Veldbrand across Ontario this summer by bicycle, hauling themselves and their gear from city to city by pedal-power alone, to take in Canada’s own rugged landscape along the way.

OLD CABIN

oldcabin.ca

Jona Barr began writing and performing as Old Cabin in 2011, and has released two EPs — Growing Up Young (2012) and a split-EP with Old Time Machine (FUM, 2012) — and one full-length LP, Old Cabin (2013) recorded with Jordy Walker (Kim Barlow, The Burning Hell, Old Time Machine). The latter received praise from such national publications as Exclaim, BeatRoute, QBiM, and Hero Hill:

“Old Cabin has documented life, with all it’s highs and lows…There is something lasting in the listen.” – Hero Hill

“Old Cabin…is soulful, sincere folk music, gently steeped in old-time traditions without re-treading tracks. This is folk music done without pretension.” – BeatRoute

“…Old Cabin is earthy - loamy even - a fertile foundation from which his musical collaborations grow. His 10 song self-titled record is as expansive in sound as his native Yukon is in size and scope. - QBiM SPiNS

Old Cabin’s self-titled LP is a testament to Barr’s up-and-comer status within the Canadian music scene. The erudite use of atmospheric soundscapes sharpens the intimacy of Barr’s warm folk vocals and raises the tracks to a higher dimension of aural exploration. Featuring his hometown band (Micah Smith, Jordy Walker, Fiona Solon, and Johnny Rodgers), these songs breathe new life into the legendary North. Effortlessly timely and timeless, Old Cabin is itself becoming a modern folk name.

In the past three years, Old Cabin has brought his music out from the Yukon woods, sharing his songs with new fans from coast to coast in two national tours. Joined by Yukon ex-pats Old Time Machine (2012) and Nova Scotia’s Corey Isenor (2013), Barr has performed at a wide assortment of venues, house shows, and festivals. Ranging from the legendary Dawson City Music Festival to intimate shows such as the Cliff House in Calgary.

In Summer 2014, Old Cabin brought his new album down south to national ears for a four-month Canadian tour that included: the Real Love Music Festival (June 6-8, Matlock, MB), MoSo Fest (June 13-15, Saskatoon, SK), Frog Fest (June 27-29, Rocky Mountain House, AB), Atlin Music and Arts Festival (July 11-13, Atlin, BC), Artswells Music and Arts Festival (August 1-3, Wells, BC), Summers End Folk Festival (August 22-24, Grand Manan, NB) Pop Montreal (September 19th)
