Event Description

A “SPECIAL EVENT” is now scheduled for the CanUS Jazz Band on June 4th 1-3 pm at Hermann’s Jazz Club. Two CanUS musicians will be out of town: Toni Blodgett and Alfons Fear are away (not together tho’, ha.)

Luckily we have Simon Stribling as leader who will be on trumpet. He had a world-travelling jazz band from Australia called “The Fireworks Jazz Band” but has relocated to Victoria and is now an exciting addition to the CanUS lineup as of July 2021 .

Former CanUS member Doug Rhodes - vocalist, baritone bass sax and soprano sax player, will be there who you can hear on 5 of the 8 CanUS CD’s available on youtube and who toured to the many jazz festivals with CanUS, including the concert at The Kennedy Center, Wash. D.C.

And breaking her rule to ‘never send in a sub who is better than you’, your vocalist & pianist will be Brooke Maxwell, internationally known for the thrilling musical, “Ride The Cyclone” that he and Jacob Richmond created plus a teaching and performing schedule locally that is astonishing.

I would suggest this is a not-to-be-missed afternoon of musicians having a blast as they join regular CanUS Band regulars Al Pease, reeds, Avram McCagherty, vocals and banjo, Lauri Lyster, a drummer and vocalist so well known in Vancouver and now living here in Victoria. Last but by no means least is the former Glenn Miller Orch. bassist, Joey Smith who found during a tour stop in Victoria that he did not want to leave (for that we thank you, Diana) , teacher at the Conservatory of Music and is #1 call for most of the musical groups of all genres in Victoria .

You can believe me - this will be an afternoon of red hot traditional jazz! I would recommend that you reserve your seat either online at www.hermannsjazz.com or by telephone: 250-388-9166 and of course, for the many home viewers here and around the world the livestream will also be available on youtube.

We in Victoria are blessed to have Arts On View Society who support this world class show space with a restaurant and full bar service. Hermann’s Jazz Club is an institution now known world wide & is the longest continuously running club in all of Canada. Your donations to that society are what have and continue to have this miracle that survived the pandemic and roars on into the future, full steam ahead.
Thanks for your support, jazz lovers.
