Event Description

Two prominent contemporary Northwest Coast First Nations artists come together once again to explore themes of ancestry, tradition friendship and family through contemporary abstractions using paper, wood, glass, metal and serigraphy.
Coast Salish artist Chris Paul and Tlingit artist Mark Preston once again bring fresh, insightful and playful pieces that play around the ideas of the collision of traditional and contemporary worlds. They articulate new themes through their diverse and contemporary use of materials and also celebrate an enduring bond of friendship in the creation of this exhibition of masterworks. Some works in the exhibition will reference historical pieces; others will offer a contemporary, personal take.

“Living in two world-views was once a difficult thing to endure.  Now it has afforded me absolute freedom from both worlds, and the knowledge to understand and appreciate them both.”
-Mark Preston

“The art I have is something I take care of rather than hold on to.  We carry it, we breathe life into it, and then we pass it on to the next generations.  For my family I have carried the art, inspired my children, walked with them and have been inspired.”

-Chris Paul
