Event Description
Australian born in small town called Norseman, Western Australia, with Australian/Slovakian/Irish heritage. Neil emigrated to Canada approx. 32 years ago. He has had an on and off interest in photography as a hobby for the last 50 or more years. His photographic interests are varied. He is totally self-taught, picking up skills from personal experience, reading and taking a keen interest in, and an appreciation of, the works of other artists and photographers.
Neil trained as a Physician and Internist and went on to health administration. In 2005 He retired from full time work as a Medical Consultant with the Ministry of Health in BC. The Sidney Fine Art Show 2006 was the first event that he had entered any works for either adjudication or showing in Canada. Over the last few years he has broadened his photography to include photographic art and beyond. Since then he has entered works in both media with success in the Sooke Fine Arts Shows, the Sidney Fine Arts Shows, the Cowichan Valley Arts Council Showcase of the Arts, the Ladysmith Fine Art Shows, “Click 07 – 13” (Nanaimo), Photo Salon (Nanaimo) Mid Island Photo Expo and the Nanaimo Arts Council Fine Art Shows, etc.. In the past he has had some of his work published and has received an award in a world competition.
He continues to exhibit his work at various centres throughout Vancouver Island
Using the camera and the modern darkroom (the computer and software) as tools, he creates images that evoke a sense of place or event as well as expressing content and emotion. He controls and adjusts the images until he has created a unique end result, personalized by his hand to contain new and often different meaning than the first captured photograph.
